brian culbertson

For all smooth jazz lovers out there, he HAS TO, and I repeat, HAS TO be one of the artistes that you listen to!'Sensual' is the word to describe his music. I was introduced to his music a few days ago by my friend(who has the most diverse collection of songs) and I was blown by it! The groovy sounds, the smooth piano, hints of Richard Clayderman yet no so, the sexy tune of the sax...awesome! i bought his CD today! It has been ages since I bought a CD,=)

Imagine yoursef seated (for some, sprawled) in a big and comfy red armchair or sofa, with a martini in your hand (for those who smoke, a cigar in the other hand), surrounded by Bang and Olsen speakers and overlooking the cityscape with its flickering lights. And oh! you're in a room with dim coloured lights..whether you're alone or not, the mood is so there!

Back to enjoy Brian's music....

Death

Comes and goes
sometimes with a loud bang,
other times, so silent and calm
as much as human nature refuse to accept it
it's part of nature, part of the cycle

facing it with its coldness staring back
feelings of hopelessness,anger,frustration and helplessness,
overwhelms and engulfs not only the afflicted one
but also the surrounding loved ones

Death - can be a blessing to some, a curse for others
it's no respecter of classes, gender, races or any social entities
immortality's just a myth
Death, with its coat of sorrow, eyes of pain
is loved by warped minds,
hated by the lovers of life.

same old brand new zouk

Same-old: the long queues, familiar faces of the bouncers, music, the tiny washrooms, the 'smell'
brand new: retro cum futuristic decor, the 'zara-ish' beige outfits of the bouncers, re-arrangement of the bars, expanded floor space of 'Phuture',

Last night, I went to Zouk-Singapore's most established water-hole cum club, with usher-mates after having dinner at Thai Express. I've heard so much about the 'revamped Zouk',comments such as 'retro decor!', 'bigger dance floor' etc. Wasn't really that keen to go Zouk because since it's re-opening,the place has been jam-packed like nobody's business. When Zouk closed for almost a month for it's renovations, I am sure the regulars aka Zoukers felt a void in their lives esp on Wed (Mambo Night) and Sat nights. It's like,'what my friend said,'A part of me has been taken away!'.Hard core yah.

Anyway, the music was a disappointment. Over at Phuture, where it supposed to play hip hop, the DJ )i think it was a guest DJ) spinned reggae. Many of the clubbers just sat around and drank, even at 12am+! This is highly unusual. Maybe coz I can't appreciate reggae, i was instantly turned off by the music and felt desperate to leave. That bad huh, you might think. The main Zouk wasn't that spectacular either. The trance music was 'thumbs down' and 80% of the crowd were just wriggling in their stationary positions. A few interesting sights though. There was this young Indian expat, who bears a close resemblance to a Bollywood star (dun ask me what name..I cannot remember! Except Aishwaraya Rai....correct spelling???), dancing and shaking his bon bon wildly to the 'spectators'. Some cheered but you can tell that those cheers were snides, haha! He was SO SO SO attention seeking! Thinking that he danced very well (*rolls eyes*), he moved with the music and cheered himself on. I was like," Grow up! You sure the cheers are not snides?!" Sometimes, these expats really turn my off..really. Then there were a couple of transexuals, really pretty ones, who were the 'party of the party'. My friend, who works as a corporate banker.told me that these were the same 'ladies' who attended a party thrown by the FJ Benjamin group.

Well...we left at 12.45am! So early.Zouk was a DISAPPOINTMENT last night, even worse than Siam Supperclub. Majority of us were tired (I wasn't!!).Someone suggested Newsroom bar and I was like 'Let's go!!".But well, if the majority are tired,no point going lah.

Looking forward to Post Bar this coming Thursday!

the itch is back

With the massive paycut, I can't afford to go for drinks as often as I used to when I was earning relatively good money.Damn. When the night comes, esp on Wed and Thurs, I feel like having a Black Russian or simply a lychee martini at my favourite hangout place, Ink Bar in The Plaza Hotel. Miss the ambience, the UNISEX washroom (I have encountered several interesting happenings there, haha) and oo..the BLACK RUSSIAN. Simply the best! Concentrated and full of flavour. Not some diluted drink that I can do myself.

Bought a copy of 8 Days last week, and coincidentally it came with a nightlife supplement entitled 'Night Out'. Cool! I lurvvvvvvveeeeeeeed the first edition.I did not know that there are so many water holes in Singapore! Some of them, as claimed by 8 Days, have jazzy furnishings and fantastic music. Well, I have learnt my lesson of reading any sort of reviews with a pinch of salt. I still think that Siam Supperclub is OVER-HYPED, that goes for Attica.Been to both and I didn't really like it. FULL OF SPGs esp the Siam one. As for Attica, I would say well-planned pricing methods. The music is only so-so. I do love the hip hop music though. One thing that pissed me and my ex-colleagues off were the rowdy Caucasians.Simply pushed through the crowd with their glasses above your head!Is saying 'excuse me?' a big chore for them?! I wonder. Or maybe they are making their presence felt.I mean come on, you think you're an angmoh so what?! I am fine with angmohs, some are really down to earth and nice. Those black sheep are simply ROWDY,ANNOYING and IRRITATING.

Do I have a drinking problem? Nah..no worries. I do not get withdrawal symptoms. I can still function well and think straight. Getting people to go clubbing is real hard these days for many reasons:
  • Busy with work (totally understand)
  • Ew...dun want lah. Smoky place (yet still go clubbing with colleagues and other friends!)
  • Must have guys then can go (Oh pls, we are going as a GROUP of girls!)
  • Need to ask bf for permission (that I can understand)
  • Expensive (Hey! That's why people come up with 'Ladies Night'! Duh!)
  • Must ask parents (I have differing views on this)

Anyway, going for drinks next Thursday.Venue: Post Bar at Fullerton Hotel. I am really keen to visit this place called 'The Balcony' at The Heeren Building.Visited the website, not bad.

By the way, the event that I am doing allows me to go for the opening party in Indochine's Forbidden City! (Beside Attica). My conference producer 'encouraged' me to go,haha. I am hesitant leh...partly coz the attendees will be the media industry people and I do not know them..awkward lah. But but..I am so 'gian' to go! Heard good things about the place and usually it's the IT place for parties of events and conferences etc. Damn.
