My Lovely Sam Soon
This was the Korean comedy soap opera that rocked Korean and Taiwanese audience last year. Currently it is showing in Singapore on SCV Channel 55 (Celestial Channel). Actually, I am unaware of its existence until I saw the trailer on TV last Saturday. The 2 minutes trailer was so so so funny! It definitely caught my attention. The story is about a 30 year old woman called 'Sam Soon' who is yearning to find a man and get married. However, the difficult part is that she does not fit into the profile of a 'typical Korean female'. She's aggressive, quite vulgar (her sentences are usually peppered with words such as 'jerk', bastard' etc), chubby and loud! Even worse, her boyfriend of 3 years got bored and dumped her last Christmas Eve. Her mum, desperate to marry her off, often sets her up on blind dates. Though Sam Soon doesn't possess the aesthetic features of a typical Korean female, she's kind-hearted, honest and is a patisser! The story slowly developed when she met Jin Hyun, owner of a French restaurant. He is what we will call a 'Prince Charming'. Rich, handsome, talented and single, he is the dream come true. However both Sam Soon and him detest each other form the beginning. Subsequently, they got into a 'contract dating' and form there, the story develops.
I was hooked with this show. It definitely reminds me of 'Full House'. I did not have a good impression with Korean dramas when the broadcasters brought them in 8 years ago.The characters always cry, have terminal illnesses, love triangles etc. I was turned off by them. This perception changed when I watched 'Full House' last year. The story was refreshing and the chemistry between the four lead characters was evident. Most of all, it was a 'laugh it out loud' comedy!
'My Lovely Sam Soon' is slightly different, in the sense that 'Sam Soon' is more 'real'. As audience, we can identify with her predicament and see ourselves in her. Perhaps that's why this show was so popular in South Korea and the ratings skyrockted! It transcends over class, weight and age. Well, the handsome Hyun Bin (who played the role of 'Jin Hyun) and Henry (played by Korean-American model/actor, Daniel Hanney) added aesthetic pleasure to the show, of course!
I actually bought the set of VCDs last Monday and finished watching it within 3 days! =P This is the first time since year 2000 that I bought VCDs.Apparently, this show is so popular that many shops in Singapore have run out of stock (both VCDs, and DVDs)!
Alright, I have to end now..though apruptly.Time to get a nap!
